At 110 km from Ulan-Ude at the right bank of Tungui river there is a rock mass where Merkit fortress was located times ago.
In 1176 the first battles of Genghis Khan with Merkit tribes took place there. These battles led off the beginning of the great Mongol Empire.
Remains of the fortress, the road, tombs, caves, places for offering sacrifices and watch-fires can still be seen. In the center of the fortress there was a well. At the top of the rock observation posts were located. |
