James C. Scott, Sterling Professor of Political Science and Anthropology and Director, Program in Agrarian Studies has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. He was a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences for academic year 1998-1999. He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and served as president of the Association of Asian Studies in 1997-98. Professor Scott is also a member of the Council on Southeast Asia Studies at YCIAS. His latest book, Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed, was published in 1998. His other publications include Political Ideology in Malaysia: Reality and the Beliefs of an Elite; Comparative Political Corruption; The Moral Economy of the Peasant: Subsistence and Rebellion in Southeast Asia; Weapons of the Weak: Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance; and Domination and the Arts of Resistance: The Hidden Transcript of Subordinate Groups. He has contributed to numerous journals, including Asian Studies; Comparative Studies in Society and History; Comparative Politics; American Political Science Review; Theory and Society; Politics and Society. His research interests include political economy, anarchism, ideology, peasant politics, revolution, Southeast Asia, and class relations.
