BackTrack has a long history and was based on many different linuxdistributions until it is now based on a Slackware linux distributionand the corresponding live-CD scripts by Tomas M. (www.slax.org) . Every package, kernel configuration and script is optimized to be used bysecurity penetration testers. Patches and automation have been added, appliedor developed to provide a neat and ready-to-go environment.

BeaFanatIX (BFX for short) is a mini Live CD. It's also a compact Linux distribution.

It was originally a remaster of BeatrIX but now uses a more recent Ubuntu core. BeatrIX itself was partly based on an old version of Ubuntu, but made heavy use of Knoppix technologies. The common ancestor of all these distributions is Debian.

BeaFanatIX in its newest version has left most of the limitations and shortcomings of its venerated ancestor, BeatrIX, behind and, besides from being a lot more modern, presents itself very flexible and easy to use. It also offers additional functionality in some respects.

What is BEERnix?BEERnix is a Linux distribution. It is a dirivitive of Knoppix. Itruns straigth off of a cd, but is also installable to a harddrive. ITIS CUURENTLY BETA, meaning it isn't perfect in anyway.There are thing i still wish to remove and add, and all sorts of otherfun stuff.
Why name it BEERnix?Because I like Beer. In fact, i can promise almost all work done onBEERnix was done with a beer in hand. Plus a long time ago when I firstsaw linux (debian in this case) the kernel boot image had the penguinwith a beer in hand, i loved it. Plus, as the logo says,"You don't buy beer, you rent it" BEERnix is free (you don't buy it)and it runs off a cd (your computer rents it) ...yeah..so..its BEERnix:)


Features of BEERnix:
Runs off of a cd!
Only about 400MB download!
Unlike other mini-spawns of KNOPPIX, this has a full fledged LinuxKernel and XFree86 Enviroment!
Fluxbox as a window manager for speed on the slowest computers!
Abiword for word procesing (can read and write manyformats including MS Word!)
XMMS for all of your audio needs!
Mplayer, with tons of codecs installed for maximum video!
Mozilla-Firebird and Thunderbird, for fast web browsing and e-mail!
Nmap-frontend, eathereal, ettercap and various other netowrk/auditingtools!
a full development enviroment!(gcc, g++ perl, python, etc)

and its current! (When a release is posted, it willnormally have the newest packages up to that day or one or two before)


BEERnix shourtcuts:

alt+F1 (F2, F3, F4) = swithc to workspace # 1(2,3,4)
alt+x = start a terminal
control+r = opena run dialog for single commands


Right click on the Desktop for a menu. (duh)

BioBrew is a collection of open-source applications for life scientists and an in-house project at Bioinformatics.Org. The BioBrew Roll for Rocks can be used to create Rocks/BioBrew Linux, a distribution customized for both cluster and bioinformatics computing: it automates cluster installation, includes all the HPC software a cluster enthusiast needs, and contains popular bioinformatics applications.

Used in many cluster systems today! To the right, a Rocks/BioBrew cluster running at the Supercomputing Conference, November 2003. Built by Glen Otero, the cluster shown was part of a larger system containing 192 nodes. Each node contained dual Xeons and used Infiniband. It clocked in at over 1 TFLOPS (one Trillion Floating-Point Operations Per Second) of performance, which would have made it one of the 500 fastest computers in the world (though not listed on top500.org). The ticket price for the cluster was USD 1 million. This part of the cluster was touring the world and was seen at expos in Arizona, California, China and Spain.
